Mission Statement

The Oregon Midwifery Council (OMC) will advance independent midwifery by increasing access to care, creating an inclusive midwifery community and promoting public and professional educational opportunities.

OMC’s Vision

We envision a community of midwives unified around a common passion with a membership that holds differences as sacred and engages in respectful dialogue to deepen understanding and sisterhood.  We envision an organization that nurtures its members by creating connection through spirited conversation and shared experiences, that welcomes all midwives and that thrives on the contributions and participation of its members.

We envision the OMC as a treasury of childbearing information for the state of Oregon, from ancient wisdom to modern, evidence-based research.  We envision an organization that honors and protects the many routes that lead to the profession of midwifery including apprenticeship, internship and formal schooling. We support midwives in their efforts to remain current and informed through the offering of a wide range of educational opportunities. OMC will lead the way toward safe and satisfying childbirth in Oregon by providing accurate information and options to families.

We envision an organization that ensures access to midwifery care for all women and that safeguards the profession of midwifery and women’s choice of care providers. OMC will preserve and promote the practice of independent midwifery, interfacing with relevant health agencies and legislative representatives. We will create a positive climate of midwifery in the state by actively engaging in the legislative process and developing a public presence.

We envision women across the state of Oregon as full and respected participants in their births. In this vision, women make informed choices, are empowered by their inherent wisdom and are accompanied by supportive midwives. We uphold a model of care where all babies are born into gentle hands, received with love and reverence. We envision families unified and transformed by their birth experiences.
