Oregon Midwifery Council

Types of Midwives
Certified Professional Midwife (CPM)
a knowledgeable, skilled and professional independent midwifery practitioner who has met the standards for certification set by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) and is qualified to provide the midwifery model of care. The CPM is the only international credential that requires knowledge about and experience in out-of-hospital settings.

Licensed Midwife (LDM)
a Direct-entry midwife who is licensed to practice in a particular jurisdiction (usually a state or province). In Oregon the prerequisite is the CPM credential and additional documented practical experience.  Oregon LDM’s are trained in and authorized to use Legend Drugs and Devices  providing oxygen, IV therapy, hemorrhagic medications postpartum, local anesthetics for suturing, and vitamin K and opthalmic antibiotics for newborns. Oregon LDMs can order lab work, obstetric ultrasound and newborn metabolic screening. LDMs are legally required to file birth certificates for all births they attend.

Direct-entry Midwife (DEM)
an independent practitioner educated in the discipline of midwifery through one or more of the following:  self-study, apprenticeship, a midwifery school, or a college- or university-based program distinct from the discipline of nursing. A direct-entry midwife is trained to provide the Midwives Model of Care to healthy women and newborns throughout the childbearing cycle, primarily in out-of-hospital settings. In Oregon, without a license, they are prohibited from obtaining and using Legend Drugs and Devices. Oregon DEMS can provide newborn metabolic screening. Ordering lab work and obstetric ultrasound can vary depending on the community where the DEM practices. DEMs in Oregon can file birth certificates for the births they attend. Most LMs or LDMs and CPMs are Direct-entry Midwives.  DEM is not a credential.

Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM)
is an individual educated in the two disciplines of nursing and midwifery, who possesses evidence of certification according to the requirements of the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

Bachelor of Science in Midwifery (BSM)
The BSM is a four year professional degree in direct-entry midwifery.

OMC provides the names of its members in good standing.  It encourages all parents to take responsibility for their birth experience by becoming informed regarding the competency of local practitioners. This can be done by asking questions, obtaining local references and knowing that good midwifery care includes thorough reading and discussing with other parents and care providers.

OMC does not endorse the practices of any provider listed here.  Please understand that OMC is an alliance of those who define themselves as midwives as well as support the practice of independent midwifery.  It is not a credentialing agency or regulatory body.  As such we cannot be accountable for the competency of members of the organization.
